SLCN Advice & Support available, book a FREE consultation
I work with Children and Young People (CYP) whose primary need would be Speech Language Communication Need (SLCN), whether this is diagnosed or undiagnosed, with an associated need eg autism, ADHD, social communication etc. and who has (or doesn't have) an Education Healthcare Plan (EHCP).
Welcome to my website and thank you for visiting.
I qualified as a Teacher in 1996 with a B.Ed (Hons) in Technology.
I am an independent SLCN (Speech Language Communication Needs) consultant, specialising in Communication and SEND.
I work in a variety of ways, including working with schools on strategic work supporting the development of communication, training for staff, mentoring and retention support for schools.
I work with families supporting more bespoke needs and I deliver training on many themes and topics that come under the umbrella term of Speech Language Communication Needs. I am a Block Therapy Practitioner (Lego™), a Speech and Language UK Trainer (Early Years Talkboost, KS1 and KS2 and Talk for Work trainer) and an Elklan trainer (supporting language in the classroom).
I have worked in education for over 28 years. I began as a mainstream secondary teacher and moved into specialising in SEND.
I have extensive knowledge of working with many families and children, young people over the years who have a variety of needs including language needs, social communication needs, specific learning needs and autistic spectrum conditions.
I have worked in a variety of SEND settings in the Midlands including primary and secondary specific learning difficulties, profound multiple learning difficulties, complex communication Needs and for the RNIB for students who had learning differences and a visual impairment. I have worked in an ASD residential setting.
I worked for a Local Authority supporting schools, children & young people and families as well as developing resources and training specific SLCN courses, for over 13 years, both as a specific SLCN teacher in a resource base on a mainstream school site, an Advisory Teacher and as an LA Education Manager for an Autism and Communication Service.
My goal is to support the promotion and understanding of all SLCN issues within education, work and family environments and I am happy to help anyone find solutions to their communication challenges.
Thank you, Jo
